Aquarium Snails Online!

Whilst some snails may be seen as a pest in aquariums (such as the Ramshorn), there are others that aquarists like to introduce into their tanks to help with cleaning, to add another interesting creature to their setup, and help create a more 'natural' look for their aquariums.

Examples of the snails introduced purposely include Apple Snails. These snails are a larger species, growing to the size of a small grape, and are available in a wide range of colours and designs which makes them an excellent addition to the aquarium.

Another snail that is a common introduction (purposely or by accident when live plants are introduced) is the Trumpet Snail. These are smaller and 'cornet' shaped snails that burrow through the aquarium gravel turning it over, introducing oxygen and preventing wastes from clogging it.

Snails thrive in an aquarium display, because they are provided with a regular food supply from when you feed your aquatic life. They can be a good indicator of over feeding, as when you are over-feeding your fish the population of these snails will increase. So if you started off with a few trumpet snails and now have a lot more, it's likely you are over-feeding your fish and should cut down! They won't cause any harm to your fish, as the increased snail population is a sign that you are already feeding them more than necessary.

The benefits of snails in the aquarium is why we do so well in selling these online and in our shop. By burrowing through your substrate they help in preventing compacting and 'dead spots', and even help to dispose of dead fish. However, as with all living creatures, snails produce excreta and therefore large numbers of snails can result in quickly deteriorating water quality. Some species do damage planted aquaria, and large numbers can look unsightly, so when ordering please make sure that the snail you want is suitable for your type of aquaria. Feel free to contact us to make sure beforehand!

Remember that snails are not always bad! As mentioned earlier many aquarists add these snails as an attraction and aid in their aquariums, and when controlled they can be of great benefit.

Please also note that some fish do eat snails! If you have fish such as clown loaches, skunk loaches, dorid and banjo catfish, bettas, most goldfish, angelfish and most species of barbs, don't expect all of your snails to stay alive - especially the smaller snails such as trumpets.

If you have any questions regarding snails or snail eating fish, don't hesitate to send us an email or give us a call. We'll be happy to help and advise.
