Grindal Worm Cultures
These are a rarity these days. These tiny Grindal Worms are about 3mm-5mm and are a brilliant small fry and fish food perfect for endlers and other livebearers.

Grindal Worm Starter Cultures
The starter culture is a small portion of the food we use, mixed with a high quality, healthy amount of the Grindal worms, taken from one of the breeding colonies used by us in our aquatics breeding program. The worms are living in some of the special mix media we find helps the worms multiply faster and live longer.
Grindal Worm Starter Kit
If you have purchased the Grindal worm starter kit, you will have an excellent culture and good supply of the food source we have found to produce the highest quality Grindal worms.
You will have a good quantity of our carefully produced living media, enough to get your culture off to a flying start. You will also have a suitable re-usable growing container for your many cultures to thrive in, a clear glass/plastic culture cover to aid visual inspection and to improve control of the humidity and moisture of the living media, a plastic tea-spoon for hygienic and safe removal of the worms and to assist feeding your fish fry.
The included detailed instruction sheet should also assist you in developing your grindal worm culture. However, if you require more information or advice please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone/email at info@aquamania.co.uk
Food Source And Preparation Of Culture
To prepare your culture simply place the living media into the culture container. Add a small quantity of water to the media and mix in well so all the media is dampened and evenly dispersed. The media should be damp to touch but never waterlogged.
Place your worm culture on the top of the media around the centre of the container and place about a teaspoon of the food source over the worm area.
If your living media is damper than is required the food can be added dry, if the media is acceptable then add a little water to the food as this will encourage the worms to eat and therefore multiply faster.
Place the inspection cover over the food and worms and replace the box lid.
It is worth inspecting the culture after a couple of days. You should hopefully notice that the food is rapidly being eaten and the worms are re-producing as fast, some of which will be on the inspection cover. This aids removal and feeding your fish.
You may wish to let your culture build up over a few more days/weeks. If so, just add more food and inspect every few days keeping your culture well fed.
Feeding And Prolonging Culture Life
When you need to harvest from your Grindal worm culture we recommend the plastic spoon for hygiene, although any spoon or razor blade may do.
Feed small amounts more frequently to your fish as this will assist faster growth of the fish fry and still allow the culture to develop quickly. It also helps to reduce pollution swings in your aquarium.
Providing the culture is kept warm around 22°c-25°c (75°f-86°f) or about room temperature, well fed and not too wet or too dry, the culture should last for several months with no major hassles. This should provide you with a daily supply of fresh fish food for your fry.
When the culture starts to decline you should split it into two or three portions and add fresh new living media and start feeding your next generation of Grindal worms.
If and when you need it, additional living media and food source is available to purchase both in store or online via our website in our Live Fish Foods section.
Some cultures experience small mite like flies that are not really a problem but may seem a little unsightly in your culture. If the inspection cover is on tight enough to the substrate the mites tend to die off and your worms should prevail unhindered. We do not recommend using pesticides of any form as a precaution, just in case this causes a problem with your fish fry or worms.
The possibility of killing your fry by poisoning defeats the object of the grindal worm culture in the first place.
Hopefully this covers pretty much everything, but again, if you need any further assistance don’t hesitate to visit us in store or contact us for help. You can always send us an email at info@aquamania.co.uk.
