How To Grow And Maintain Aquarium Plants
To Grow plants successfully you need to consider several important factors:
- Planting Medium
- Plant Food / Fertilisers
- CO2 Diffusers
- Lighting
- Compatibility with your fish etc
Planting Medium
Plants will do well in fine gravel or sand mixed with a planting medium such as Tetra Complete Substrate and API Pure Laterite. On a regular basis you can supplement this with tablet fertilisers such as Tetra Crypto Tablets and API Root Tabs. Also, liquid foods that are rich in iron can be used such as Tetra PlantaMin or API LeafZone.
Plants And CO2
Plants also require an intake of CO2, this occurs naturally but can be greatly enhanced by many CO2 injection units now on sale. A very popular unit for only £13.99 is the Tetra Plant CO2 Optimat System. These will greatly improve your chances of keeping your aquarium plants healthy.
Lighting
The next important requirement is lighting. All plants require a medium to high ratio of light. Our recommended light tube is the Arcadia Freshwater Lamp, as this gives a good spectrum of lighting essential for healthy aquarium plants.
At least two light tubes must be in operation for approximately 8 to 12 hours per day.
Arcadia also do an excellent over-tank luminaire which is the ultimate system for growing plants - bright, economic to run, and very stylish.
Please remember that all light tubes must be replaced every 9 - 12 months in order to provide your plants with the correct spectrum of light. DOn't wait for the light tube to run out, it's too late.
A little experiment with these products will eventually give you the perfect balance for an underwater garden.
Compatibility
Don't ruin your lovely aquarium plants by introducing the wrong fish to your plant paradise. Some fish like to eat plants, such as the Silver Dollar. Other fish will dig them up and tear them to pieces such as Oscars and Large Cichlids.
If you have any doubt as to whether certain fish will be alright with your plants, or any other query regarding keeping live aquarium plants, don't hesitate to send an email to our fish experts at info@aquamania.co.uk, as after all your efforts we would hate to see the wrong fish destroy your endeavours.
Happy Planting!
