Maintaining Live Foods
Maintaining crickets, grasshoppers and locusts requires an understanding of what is likely to cause them to die.
|
|
In this respect, they are similar to reptiles, in that they will react adversely to a poor environment. With the correct environment it should be possible to maintain crickets for two or more weeks.
There are four chief reasons for shortened lifespan:
1. Humidity - Caused by poor ventilation and extreme temperature changes
2. Temperature - Usually over-heating
3. Stress - Caused by a combination of the above and other factors
4. Insecticides - Take care if using vapona to treat mites!
To get the best from your live food stock, try to achieve the following...
Humidity
If there is condensation permanently in the tump and the bran is damp, the humidity is to high. A relative humidity (RH) of 60% or lower is best, humidity above this will kill slowly.
Always inpack the cricket tubs from their delivery box ASAP, to improve ventilation. Do not store tubs near fish tanks. Once the crickets are weakened they will continue to die.
Temperature
Cool temperatures reduce activity, which reduces heat and stress. An idea temperature for storage is 60F, try to get as close to this as possible.
Stress
This is caused not only by high temperatures and humidity, but also by light. If you look at a tub of crickets that is sitting on a display shelf, you will notice that most of the crickets are congregated on the underside of the egg carton.
They try to avoid bright light and can become overcrowded under the egg carton, so it is best to keep them in darkened conditions.
Insecticide
If you are using vapona strips for treating mites, be careful not to expose your crickets to the vapours. Do not store vapona in the same area as your crickets.
Finally, keep a check on the amount of bran in the tubs. If the crickets are largely inactive it shouldn't run out, but top it up if it does and check the conditions.
The principles applied to crickets also apply to mealworms and waxworms, particularly regarding temperature, however giant mealworms are best stored at room temperature.
