Micro Worm Cultures
These are an ideal culture to feed your fry fish, from Newly born livebearer fry to a second growth stage feed for egglaying species.

|
Micro Worm Starter Cultures
The starter culture is a small portion of the food we use, mixed with a high quality, healthy dose of micro worms, taken from one of the breeding colonies used by us in our aquatics breeding program.
Micro Worm Starter Kit
If you have purchased the micro worm starter kit, you will have an excellent culture and good supply of the food source we have found to produce the highest quality micro worms.
You will also have a suitable re-usable growing container for your many cultures to follow, a handy paint brush for hygienically removing and feeding your precious fry, and again for hygiene… a plastic tea-spoon for mixing your micro worm growth food mix.
The included detailed instruction sheet should also assist you in developing your micro worm culture. However, if you require more information or advice please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Food Source And Preparation Of Culture
The best way to prepare your food source is to use approximately 8 slightly heaped teaspoons or about 20 grams of the mixture. Add to this about 16 teaspoons of cooled boiled or bottle water (around 80ml), and mix together to the consistency of a thin paste. You can mix the paste in the container provided.
This should give you a container depth of about 5mm. We find this is the optimum depth without excessive waste. Mix in the dosed starter culture to the paste mix and roughly level out around the container. The mix should slowly find it’s own level.
When you need any more of our special micro worm growth food it is always available in store or online at www.aquamania.co.uk in our Live Fish Foods Section.
In emergencies, you could use a fine oat based cereal such as ‘”Ready Brek”. This may not give you as speedy results, but is a good substitute if you have none of our mix available.
A good temperature at which to grow your culture successfully, we feel, is about 23-26°C or 73-79°F. You may want a thermometer for confirmation of temperature such as the Betta Digital Thermometer.
If your culture is kept at the warmer end of the scale it will grow faster, but will also deteriorate quicker as well, so be careful not to dry out your culture. If needed, you can add a small quantity of water to keep the micro worm culture moist.
The culture is not particularly light sensitive, but you may wish to keep it out of sight.
Using And Re-Starting The Culture
After only a few days the culture will be ready to be used to feed to your fry. You will notice this as an almost microscopic rippling effect on the surface of the food source and up the sides of your container.
The sides of the container are the biggest, best and easiest micro worms to harvest. Carefully remove these excess worms with the paintbrush provided and feed your fry as required. Several ‘small feeds’ per day are better for your fry and the culture than one or two ‘big feeds’.
You should notice the food source going runny over a period of 7-14 days but don’t worry, this is normal. The culture should still be a light creamy colour, but you should start a new culture from this one to ensure a constant supply of good healthy micro worms.
You should remove the new culture worms from the liquid part of the culture. This should ensure the freshest and healthiest worms for your new mix. As the colour of your original culture darkens, you may also notice a none-to-pleasant odour, this means that the culture is at the end of its life. So, if you haven’t done already, you should now start a fresh culture before it’s too late.
Wash out the container with water, but do not use detergents. You will probably want to use a scrubbing type sponge or cloth. Again, don’t use detergents as traces not removed could pollute the culture or poison your sensitive fish fry.
Hopefully this covers pretty much everything, but again, if you need any further assistance don’t hesitate to visit us in store or contact us for help. You can always send us an email at info@aquamania.co.uk.
