Milk Snakes
Milk snakes are beautiful, quite docile snakes that can be found in southern parts of Canada, throughout the US, and in Central and parts of South America.

|
Common Name: Milk Snake
Scientific name: Lampropeltis triangulum
Life expectancy: Up to 20 years
Size: Up to 4 ft depending on sub species
Sexing: The most reliable way to have a milk snake sexed is by taking it to a vet or experienced herpetologist and having it probed. Experienced herpetologists can also determine sex visually. The hemipenes make the tails of males longer and thicker than the tails of females of the same size. When looked at from the side, male tails are generally thicker for longer due to the hemipenes. Female tails are usually much thinner from about a quarter of the length from the vent.
Position in Viv: Ground dwelling, and secretive -they like to hide.
Activity Cycle: Milk snakes are crepuscular, meaning they come out at dawn and dusk
UV Lighting: Added light is not necessary providing they are in a naturally lit room. They do not like bright light.
Humidity Requirements: The enclosure of a milk snake should be dry.
Temperatures and Heating Equipment: Hot spot 84 - 88 degrees F Daytime 78 to 82 degrees F. Night time 65 to 70 degrees F. Heating is best provided by a guarded ceramic heating element attached to a pulse proportional thermostat. A cheaper alternative is a heat mat and mat stat place under one third of the viv, but ceramics are a much better option.
Housing: Minimum 45cm x 18cm x18cm (w.d.h)
Substrate: Reptile bark for adults. They like deep substrate that they can burrow in to hide.
Decor: Plenty of places to hide and branches for the snake to climb on. Also artificial plants if desired.
Diet: In nature, milk snakes feed on frogs, small rodents, other snakes and lizards. In captivity, most milk snakes will eagerly feed on pre-killed mice.
Water Supply: Fresh water should always be available and large enough for the snake to bath in should it want to.
General Ease of Care: Provided that the husbandry requirements are met these are very hardy easy snakes to keep.
Additional Information: This species is represented by three general pattern types:
- The tri-coloured snake that has three bold rings of white or cream, black, and red or orange.
- Another has a light tan, grey or cream background colour with darker red, russet or brown dorsal and lateral blotches.
- The other is the black milk snake which starts out tri-coloured but turns into a completely patternless black snake by two years of age.
