Royal Pythons And Boa Constrictors
The Royal Python is widespread throughout the grasslands and open scrub forests of West and Central Africa.
|
|
It is one of the smallest species of python, growing to between 3 and 5 foot in general. They have a calm and even temperament and make excellent candidates for captive care.
The Royal Pythons main drawback is a tendency to refuse feeding for protracted periods, but this is not normally a problem in healthy animals.
Housing
Royal Pythons are best housed individually in a purpose made melamine vivarium. AS a guideline the size of the vivarium should be approximately two thirds the length of the snake in length and one third of the size of the snake in width, and at least 1ft high.
The overall air temperature should be between 80-86F, with a basking spot of 90F. Also, a water bowl and hide must be provided at all times.
Diet
Royal Pythons principally feed on small rodents and chicks. They should be offered food weekly. Their preferred food is gerbils as they are native to Africa, but most will feed readily on mice and small rats.
They have a tendency to fast, but provided they are healthy and have good body weight this will not be a problem.
Boa Constrictors
These are prevelent throughout South, Central America and neighbouring islands. The most widely kept boa is the common boa from Colombia. A relatively slender snake, the boa grows up to 8-9ft.
When frequently handled, boas often become quite tame. Consideration should be given to ensuring that a suitably large vivarium can be provided when the snake reaches maturity.
Housing
Housing requirements are as for a royal python in terms of vivarium size, relative to the snake, and for it's heating and water needs.
Diet
Boas tend to feed redily on mice and rats, and should be offered food weekly.
On Receipt Of Your Snake
Always set up your snakes vivarium at least one day before bringing your snake home. This will allow you to ensure the temperature settings are correct.
Your snake may need a few days to acclimatise. During this period do not stress the animal by over handling. Wait a few days before offering food to the snake.
