Small Communal Lizards
Creating communities of lizards require a careful selection of species and sexes, as males can be very territorial.
|
|
It is also necessary to ensure that the environmental requirements are similar for all the species, because some of these lizards are tree dwelling (arboreal) and some are ground dwelling (terrestrial). It is possible to create communities that will occupy different areas of the vivarium.
The following information is applicable to the following species:
- Green Anoles (anolis carolinensis)
- Brown Anoles (anolis sagrei)
- House Geckos (hemidactylus sp)
- Longtail Lizards (takydromus sexlineatus)
- Wall Lizards (acanthodactylus sp)
Housing
The amount of space required will depend on the number of lizards being kept. Small lizards tend to be very active so it is important that enough space is provided.
A pair of green anoles would require a vivarium of about 2 cubic feet. The vivarium should be furnished with plants and branches to provide hiding places and to satisfy the arboreal habits of these lizards (doing this can also create very attractive displays).
A daytime temperature of 80-86F should be provided with a basking area where the temperature reaches 88-95F.
It is essential to provide the correct ultra-violet lighting (UV). This is necessary to metabolise the calcium they get from their food and supplements, into their bone growth. Without the correct UV, the lizards will develop metabolic bone disease which will cripple and eventually kill the animal.
There are specific high output UV fluorescent tubes specifically made for reptiles and it is important that one of these is used for these lizards.
Diet
These small lizards are insectivorous and can be maintained on small house crickets. It is critical that their food is supplemented with a calcium or vitamin supplement. This is achieved by dusting the crickets with the supplement prior to feeding.
Many small lizards will not drink from standing water, it is therefore important to spray them at least daily so that they can drink from the droplets of water.
On Receipt Of Your Lizards
Always ensure that your vivarium is set up at the right temperature before introducing the lizards. Offer it both food and water, but don't expect them to feed immediately as they may be stressed from their journey and will need time to acclimatise.
